Zoom F6 Field Recorder
The Zoom F6 is, literally, a game changer for me. This recorder has resulted in better recordings and a higher “keeper” rate. This device features 32-bit float recording and dual analog-digital (AD) converters, basically eliminating clipping. Why is this important? I do a great deal of “drop rig recording”, where I will leave the recorder running for several hours and come back later to retrieve it. The gamble with this style of recording is setting a recording level that captures the ambience without missing the barely audible chirps or loud screeches of birds. Without going into a deep dive, 32-bit float recording allows me to capture the full dynamic range of the scene without fear of missing any sounds.
I plan on doing a more in-depth review of this device at a later date, but cutting to the chase, I really love the Zoom F6.

Zoom H5 Handy Recorder
The Zoom H5 was my first serious audio recorder. As its name suggests, this is a practical device and highly capable in most environments. It has 2 XLR inputs and the built-in microphone modules are swappable depending on your recording needs. Where the Zoom H5 shines is its ability to accept external microphones via a built-in 3.5mm adapter on the included X/Y capsule. It suffers a bit in extremely quiet environments, but for the price, the Zoom H5 will always have a place in my kit.
